Public School BusMonday, December 7 a 13-year-old girl jumped off a moving school bus after a fight with another classmate. The bus was traveling south on the Gulf Freeway in Galveston, Texas when the girl hit the emergency exit button on the rear door and purposely jumped out onto the highway.

The students on the bus were traveling from an alternative school in Texas City. According to the bus driver, two female students were fighting on the bus. The driver pulled over, separated the two students placing one near the front of the bus and the other girl in the back. Shortly after the driver resumed driving on the highway, the girl in the back opened the emergency exit and jumped out while the other students watched.

Child Killed In Crash Between SUV and Motorcycle

Last Monday, October 26, 2015, a horrifying accident between a Ford Expedition and a motorcycle took the life of a 5 year old boy in Harris County.

According to Sgt. Mike Harvey with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the impact of the accident sent the motorcyclist into the SUV. His helmet crushed the head of the little boy in the rear seat strapped in a child safety seat.

The crash happened in the 2900 block of E. FM 1960 at Moonshine Hill Loop Rd in Humble. The mother of the slain child was driving the SUV and had just made a left turn, crossing the path of the motorcyclist. According to the accident investigator, the motorcycle, a Suzuki GSX-R750 was traveling at a high rate of speed and the SUV driver most likely didn’t see him before impact.

On September 10, 2015 the FDA strengthened a warning about the risk of bone loss for those taking Invokana and Invokamet (canagliflozin) to treat type 2 diabetes. Johnson & Johnson’s Invokana is part of a new class of type 2 diabetes drugs, SGLT2 inhibitors. Approved by the FDA in 2013, Invokana is on track to make blockbuster status this year with nearly $6M in sales in the first 6 months.

The FDA has new information based on clinical trials on bone fracture risk and decreased bone mineral density among patients taking Invokana. A 2 year study of 714 elderly diabetics found that those taking this SGLT2 drug lose more bone density in their hips [...]

Deadly School Bus Accident In Harris County

Two students were killed in when the school bus they were riding in flew off the 610 South Loop at Telephone Road in East Harris County. The driver and 2 other students were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with their friends and families during this difficult time.

The violent crash occurred Tuesday morning while the bus was transporting students to school. A spokesman with the Houston Police reported that it appears the bus was clipped on the driver’s side by a Buick LaSabre. The bus driver appears to have overcorrected which caused the bus to flip over a guardrail and onto the roadway below. The car’s driver has been identified as a Houston school teacher by the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Invokana Risk Of Bone Fractures

Last week the FDA increased their warning of the increased risk between bone fractures and type 2 diabetes medications, Invokana and the combo drug Invokamet. They have revised the drug’s labels adding information about decreased bone density and the risk of hip and lumbar spine fractures. Fractures have been reported as early as 12 weeks after beginning treatment.

The FDA had already listed bone fractures as a possible side effect. However, after reviewing the results of a 2 year postmarketing study of 714 elderly patients with type 2 diabetes, they concluded that drugs containing canagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor contained in Invokana and Invokamet carried a serious risk of fractures. The FDA is still evaluating whether to order studies or increase warnings on other SGCLT2 diabetes drugs such as Farxiga and Jardiance.

Motorcycle accident

Motorcycle accidentThis week, 3 motorcyclists were killed in 3 separate accidents in Harris County.
The first death occurred shortly before 10am Tuesday on Westpark Tollway at Fondren. Witnesses at the scene claim that a young male on a motorcycle was speeding and weaving between lanes of traffic when he struck at least 1 car and lost control. The motorcyclist died at the scene and debris from the accident was strewn across the tollway. There were no other injuries reported to authorities. Investigators have stated that the unidentified dead man was on a stolen motorcycle and may have been trying to avoid a deputy constable driving behind him.

Man Killed By Alleged Drunk Driver In Harris County

Four Year Old Daughter Of Suspected Drunken Driver Is Also Injured In Crash

Around 2am this morning, a suspected drunk driver caused a deadly accident in NW Harris County according to the Harris County Sherriff’s Office.

The drunk driver suspect was heading west down FM 1960 in an SUV near Fritz Oak Place. His 4 year old daughter was sitting in the front seat and not in a child safety seat. He made a U-turn and was hit by another car. The driver of the car died at the scene of the accident.
The suspected drunk driver was not injured, but his daughter was taken to an area hospital and listed in stable condition. The SUV driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. Additional charges may be filed later.

Congress Questioning FDA Over Power Morcellator’s Risk To Women

Last Friday 12 members of the US Congress sent a request to the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) asking them to investigate the FDA’s monitoring of a potentially dangerous gynecological device. The laparoscopic power morcellator, has been in use since 1993. The tissue dissecting tool has been linked to the spread of cancerous cells in hysterectomy or uterine fibroid removal surgeries.

The letter from Congress stated that, “Hundreds, if not thousands of women in American are dead because of a medical device known as the laparoscopic power morcellator.” The members of Congress are concerned as to why the power morcellator was widely used for 20 years before the FDA issued safety warnings about the possible hidden cancer risk.

When the FDA first approved the device in 1993, they concluded that the risk was small with only about 1 in 10,000 women having the hidden cancer cells that might be spread. In late 2013, after reviewing [...]
