Taking popular heartburn medications including Nexium and Prilosec may have the potential to trigger kidney disease, nephritis and renal failure. The attorneys of D. Miller & Associates are investigating whether our clients might be able to file a legal claim due to non disclosure of this potentially fatal risk.
A January 2016 study published in Jama Internal Medicine shows that use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), a category which includes Nexium and Prilosec, was associated with a higher risk of chronic kidney disease.
The researchers examined data for 10,482 participants. They concluded that those using PPIs had a 45 – 50% higher risk for chronic kidney disease.
PPIs are prescribed to prevent and treat ulcer in the duodenum as well as chronic stomach acid problems including GERD. GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) occurs when stomach acid regulaly enters the esophagus. It is estimated that as many as 20% of Americans experience bouts of either acid or gastroesophageal reflux.
Side effects of kidney disease include:
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue and weakness
- Change in urine output
- Swelling of feet and ankles
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Feeling cold
Heartburn Is Commonly Treated With PPIs
As many as 15 million Americans are using PPIs including Nexium and Prilosec. It is alleged that if the manufacturer had adequately warned doctors about the increased risk of kidney disease, fewer patients would be prescribed PPIs. Previous studies have also suggested that PPIs may play a part in developing cardiovascular disease.
If you are currently taking PPIs such as Nexium to treat your acid reflux, don’t stop without discussing your options with your doctor. You may want to ask if you could replace your prescription with a different medication or a non-drug strategy such as losing weight or adjusting your diet.
